People with Convictions…

The BBC has reported that “Scottish government renames ‘offender’ as ‘person with conviction’.” This was as a result of the work undertaken by our good selves at the behest of the Scottish Government. The labelling of people with convictions as an offender or ex-offender is a pejorative statement that can keep someone in the revolving door of criminality. By losing the label, we can give people hope that there is a different way forward for them to contribute to society…

The change is not a new thing though. It was first introduced by Paul Wheelhouse MSP who was the then community safety Minister when he was speaking at an employability conference in Edinburgh. Throughout his speech Mr Wheelhouse referred to people with convictions…

There is still much work to be done to remove other labels and this is something we shall continue to strive for…

BBC Story (well they did link to our website…)

The story was also discussed on the Stephen Jardine show on Radio Scotland…

Freelance Part Time Artist Producer?

Scottish Prison Arts Network (SPAN) are looking for a freelance part time Artist Producer to join their team for a 10 month period.

The role includes responsibility for producing and facilitating a  programme of 3 creative conversations bringing together a range of cultural and criminal justice stakeholders from the Arts and Criminal Justice sectors in Scotland.

This year of creative conversations is designed to support SPAN and  potentially new and existing stakeholders or partners to focus on specific or identified issues that the sector faces, from changes in criminal justice services to supporting mainstream arts organisations in becoming more aware of addressing  equal opportunities and exploring throughcare. Each conversation will seek to create conditions for new collaborations and creative learning.

We are ideally looking for a very organised and experienced committed arts practitioner with a real and active understanding of the value and importance of the arts in criminal justice settings and a demonstrable experience in creating engaging events or opportunities that support purposeful conversations and learning.

This job is fee based and is perhaps best suited to an individual working on an existing portfolio of projects.

About SPAN:

The Scottish Prison Arts Network (SPAN) is a charity first set up in 2011 to support and advocate for artists and arts projects in Scottish Prisons.

Since it’s creation the charity has gone from strength to strength and has over 250 members attending events every year. We are passionate about supporting creative opportunities for prisoners, their families and communities affected by crime and providing high quality support and training across the sector.

You can see more about our organisation at the following address:

www.scottishprisonarts.net

Please send CV to [email protected] and a letter saying why you are interested in the post.

There will be a fixed fee of £2400 for the responsibility of producing and facilitating a  programme of 3 creative conversations bringing together a range of cultural and criminal justice stakeholders from the Arts and Criminal Justice sectors in Scotland. The potential for a further contract will be subject to funding.
